Outbox April 13, 2018
Inbox/Outbox April 13, 2018 I love getting older in April, because my birthday usually falls right as the flowers are beginning to bloom and the air is getting warmer, and it becomes possible to read and walk back and forth to work. Unfortunately, this years April has been a little snowy and chilly so farâ"but at least I had books to keep me happy and warm, as always. In April and May, Im trying to really crack down on my to-read shelf and make a good-sized dentâ"heres a rundown of my recent book recommendations, the books Ive acquired this week, and whats up next as we head into the weekend. Inbox (Books Acquired) Bitch Planet, Vol. 1: Extraordinary Machine by Kelly Sue Deconnick and valentine de landro When more than one book-world person you respect posts about getting a tattoo based on a graphic novel, it starts to catch your eye, especially when the tattoo is the rebellious NC, or Non-Compliant. Last week, I visited the comics store in my neighborhood with my boyfriend, birthday cash in my pocket, and saw Bitch Planet on the shelf. It was time to check it out. Meaty: Essays by Samantha Irby I adored Irbyâs We Are Never Meeting in Real Life, and so did much of the world, so theyre reissuing Irbys first essay collection. Im seeing her on tour for it later this spring, so I purchased it at my local bookstore so I could be prepared. A book friend told me that it could have used a stronger editing hand the first time around, so Im cautiously excited to see how this one holds up compared to her later work. Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry This is one of my fatherâs all-time favorite books, and heâs been pushing me to read it for a very long time. I take family recommendations very seriously as my family is full of devoted readers, and so weve been looking for it. But somehow in the last few years, every time we entered a bookstore, it wouldnât be thereâ"it was like they were letting the print run out, even though it was a classic. We finally figured out why when we saw the newly released 25th anniversary edition on shelves. He got it for me the moment he saw it had finally arrived, and gave it to me as an early birthday present! Outbox (What Iâve Finished) Jonathan Strange Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke People have been telling me that this was a fantasy must-read for a long time, so I avoided anything that could be construed as a spoiler, and really didnt have expectations going into it. I read this classic over a trip to Florida with my family and over my birthday, and it somehow managed to be both 1,000 pages and way too short. It was a Jane Austen social comedy but in an alternative England in which magic is returning, with a heavy dose of faerieâ"and it worked splendidly. In the Queue (Whatâs Next) They Canât Kill Us Until They Kill Us by Hanif willis-Abdurraqib I first met Abdurraqibs writing when he read with Eve L. Ewing for the launch of her incredible collection Electric Arches at the Seminary Coop Bookstore in Hyde Park, Chicago. I couldnt afford another book at the time, but was lucky enough to stumble on a signed copy later at another favorite local store, Volumes Bookcafe. His reading was fantasticâ"his pieces are half-poetry, half-prose, which is a favorite style of mine. Circe by Madeline Miller Im lucky enough to be a Book of the Month subscriber thanks to a gift from my grandparents last holiday season. They passed down to me a real love of mythology and folk talesâ"theyre professors of such things, and used to give me books of stories when I was young that really fostered that love of myth and magic. That ingrained love made this months selection easy, and Im excited to see what Circe will do with the myths we know and love. The Djinn Falls in Love and Other Stories edited by Mahvesh Murad I collect books in which Neil Gaiman is featured, which is how this collection first got my attention, but the entire line-up is impressive, including Nnedi Okorafor (Who Fears Death, Binti) and Helene Wecker (The Golem and the Jinni). Theres always room on my shelves for a well-curated collection of fantasy, and Im excited to see the different interpretations of djinn in this collection. What does your inbox/outbox look like this week?

Beowulf A Good Leader - Free Essay Example
Sample details Pages: 2 Words: 605 Downloads: 2 Date added: 2019/05/18 Category Literature Essay Level High school Tags: Beowulf Essay Did you like this example? Real leadership is leaders recognizing that they serve the people they lead. This quote by Pete Hoekstra, a Dutch-American politician, perfectly describes the character of Beowulf. Beowulf is a good leader because he shows bravery, honor, and loyalty to his people in spite of the dangers he faces throughout the poem. In the story, Beowulf knew that his people needed a leader and that he was the only one who could save them. To be labeled a good leader, a person must exhibit bravery. At the beginning of the poem, Beowulf and fourteen of his men sailed to Denmark to rid the kingdom of an evil monster named Grendel, a descendant from Cain. Beowulf had heard many stories about how Grendel killed all of King Hrothgars men. Beowulf travels to Denmark because he wants to fight Grendel to test his bravery and to save the kingdom. He knew that he would be the only one in the land with enough courage to battle the enemy. After killing Grendel in the mead hall, Beowulf was honored by hundreds of people in the kingdom for being their brave hero. Beowulf was able to be victorious over Grendel because he did not let his fear of failure stop him from saving the lives of many people (Leadership in Literature). Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Beowulf A Good Leader" essay for you Create order Another quality of a good leader is someone who is honorable. An honorable person is someone who is noble, trustworthy, and ethical. Before leaving for his fight with Grendel, Beowulf throws away his sword and armor so the fight would be fair, since Grendel has no idea of the arts of war, / or shield or swordplay (681-682). Beowulf states that he would find no satisfaction in beating Grendel unless the fight was completely fair, which meant he would have to fight the monster bare-handed. Beowulf shows his true character in this scene of the poem because only the most honorable of men would risk his life so that no person had the greater advantage over the other. Grendel, on the other hand, shows his moral inferiority once he attacks Beowulf and his men in their sleep. Beowulfs honorable heart is rewarded at the end of this battle by being able to defeat his unworthy foe (Brave New World). Loyalty is one of the most paramount qualities of a great leader. A good leader must be trustworthy, leaving his/her people without a hint of doubt that they will not be let down. After the tragic death of the young King Heardred, the kingdom was in dire need of a new leader. This was when Beowulf steps in. Not only does Beowulf rule the Geats, but he did so for over fifty years. During his time as king, Beowulf fought in two more treacherous battles, allied with the Danes, and brought the kingdom significant amount of riches. Beowulf was a devoted leader to his people and showed his loyalty to them by his courageous heart and wise mind. The Danes not only praised Beowulf for being a fearless warrior but also for being the loyal ruler they needed so gravely for their kingdoms sake (Brave New World). A leader is someone who serves the people they lead. Beowulf recognized the desperate need for a leader and he knew he was the only one suited for the task at hand. Beowulf makes a good leader because he exhibits great amounts of bravery, honor, and loyalty to his people. Beowulf selflessly risked his life multiple times for the sake of the Geats. Beowulfs exceptional leadership qualities of bravery, honor, and loyalty will be remembered by readers for years and years to come.
